Critics have frequently praised the Stenzls for achieving the rare balance of “the freedom of a soloist with four hands,” while illuminating even the most complex scores with remarkable clarity and refinement. Their performances are celebrated for both technical brilliance and a nuanced interpretative approach that reveals the finest details of the repertoire.
Hans-Peter and Volker Stenzl began their musical studies in Germany, first in Stuttgart with Renate Werner and later in Frankfurt with Herbert Seidel. Their artistic development continued in London at the prestigious Royal Academy of Music, where they completed a two-year postgraduate program under the guidance of Frank Wibaut, Hamish Milne, and Stephen Kovacevich, graduating with distinction in both solo and duo performance. The brothers also benefited from private lessons with the legendary pianist Alfred Brendel, while further artistic inspiration came from distinguished musicians such as Bruno Canino and Norbert Brainin.
Their remarkable talent quickly gained international recognition. The duo are laureates of 11 international competitions, including the prestigious ARD International Music Competition in Munich and the Dranoff International Two Piano Competition in Miami. Since then, their career has taken them to concert halls across Europe, the Americas, Africa, and Asia.
In 1991 they made their debut at the world-renowned Salzburg Festival, marking an important milestone in their international career. Over the decades, they have appeared in some of the most prestigious venues worldwide, including Royal Festival Hall and Wigmore Hall in London, Merkin Concert Hall in New York, Suntory Hall in Tokyo, and the Berlin Philharmonie.
The Stenzls have also performed as soloists with numerous orchestras under the baton of renowned conductors including Helmuth Rilling, Gerd Albrecht, Thomas Hengelbrock, and Gustavo Dudamel, further solidifying their reputation as one of the foremost piano duos of their generation.
Their discography includes more than fifteen acclaimed recordings, demonstrating a remarkable stylistic range across both solo and duo repertoire. Beyond the concert stage, the Stenzls have also engaged in innovative musical-literary collaborations with prominent actors and writers, creating unique interdisciplinary performances.
Equally important is their dedication to education. Hans-Peter and Volker Stenzl hold the first international chair of piano duo studies at the University of Music and Theatre Rostock and also teach at the music universities in Stuttgart and Trossingen. Through their teaching, they have mentored numerous prize-winning young pianists and ensembles who have gone on to establish successful international careers.
The duo continues to give masterclasses around the world and regularly serve on juries of prestigious music competitions. Their contributions to musical life have been widely recognized, including their appointment as Associates of the Royal Academy of Music London and their honorary membership in the International Piano Duo Association of Japan.
Their appearance at the Accordi Musicali Festival 2026 promises to be one of the highlights of the festival program, offering audiences the opportunity to experience the exceptional artistry, intellectual depth, and extraordinary musical unity that have defined the Stenzl Piano Duo for decades.
