Held once again at the magnificent Teatro Marrucino in Chieti, the concert drew a captivated audience who gathered to witness two internationally renowned musicians bring to life a rich and emotionally charged programme.
The evening opened with Nadia Boulanger’s 3 Pieces for Cello and Piano, a hauntingly beautiful and introspective work composed in 1914 that set a poignant tone for the night. This was followed by César Franck’s Cello Sonata in A major, originally written for violin but now a staple of the cello repertoire. The duo delivered a masterful interpretation of this Romantic masterpiece, with their seamless interplay bringing out the full grandeur and passion of the sonata’s sweeping arcs, earning raucous applause from the hall.
The final work on the programme brought a touch of the contemporary to the evening, with a performance of Alexey Shor’s Cello Concerto No. 3 in its version for cello and piano. Known for his richly melodic and emotionally direct musical language, Shor’s work added a compelling modern counterpoint to the programme’s earlier pieces, eliciting an enthusiastic and heartfelt response from the audience, with many praising the synergy between the two performers.
